Dear Parents,
I hope you're all staying warm! With last week's cold weather days, and just coming back from Winter Break, I am ready to get back into the swing of things. I feel like our routine has become so fragmented. With that said, we have been working hard. Here's what we've been focusing on right before break and the few days we've been back at school.
*Jolly Phonics: w, -ng, v, oo, and y.
*Word Family Words: -en, -eg, -et
*Sight Words: is, said, me, for, and do
*Science: Animal Movements
*Social Studies: Conflict Resolution
We have been working on solving problems with our words since the beginning of Kindergarten. The children are doing a super job stating what the problem is, how it makes them feel, and what needs to be done to fix the problem.
*Social Emotional Learning: Managing Frustration and Ways to Calm Down
During these lessons we discussed how we all feel angry or mad sometimes. When our body starts to feel this way it helps to think or say, "Stop! I feel angry (frustrated, mad, etc.)." After stating our emotion, we brainstormed ways to calm down (counting, belly breathing, positive self-talk).
Math: We just finished up our Chapter 6 assessment, that focused on numbers 1-20. Over the next few weeks, we'll be studying plane and solid shapes. Thanks so much for sending in the shoe boxes! We'll be using them to construct shape dioramas.
Writer's Workshop: We are wrapping up our unit on True Stories. The children are learning how to go back and edit their writing. I bought special green pens to encourage this step in the writing process. The kids have been excited to use these pens, so they're carefully reading over their completed books looking for ideas to add and ways to edit. Most editing consists of: adding end punctuation, correcting misspelled sight words, and adding vowels to kindergarten spelling. This week we're going to start using double-lined paper, just like what we use during handwriting practice.
The BIG question today was, "When do we get to go sledding?" I told the children before break that I'll take them sledding outside at recess, as soon as there's enough snow on the ground. We talked about a plan and agreed on the following...
Wednesday EVERYONE will get to go out for recess. The children that stay for lunch will go out for lunch recess. The children that go home on the 11:50 buses, will go out for recess the last 15 minutes of the day.
Friday, we will all go outside to sled. The children should not bring sleds from home. We have enough for everyone.
Please send warm winter gear on both of these days, so your child can participate in the winter fun (snippets, boots, hats, gloves/mittens).
Please mark your calendars...
1. There's no school on Monday, January 19th, because of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
2. We'll go on our winter field trip to Rivershire Nature Center on Friday, January 23rd. Please send your child to school in warm winter gear. We'll be going outside on a winter hike.
Thanks for all your support!
