Dear Parents,
Thanks so much for helping your child find "50's clothes" to wear to school on Friday. The Sock Hop was so much fun! Please check out the photos on my website. They are TOO cute! You'll see Ms. Mastores taught us all how to dance to the oldies, and then we enjoyed root beer floats. Later that day, Ms. Mastores was honored as a "Symetra Hero in the Classroom." Mrs. Chiesa, a second grade teacher at Sprague, nominated Ms. Mastores. Ms. Mastores is one of 15 other teachers in the Chicago area to be chosen for this award. Ms. Mastores will be recognized on-field at the November 23 Chicago Bears vs. Tampa Bay Bucaneers game at Solider Field. I'm so proud of her!
Now that assessments and report cards have been completed, we are back in the swing of things. Please be sure to read over your child's report card before his/her conference. This is a great time to discuss questions and concerns. I hope you're proud of your child's progress. Grades are an important part of school, but learning is reflected in so many other ways. I look forward to sharing your child's writing samples, so you can see the wonderful progress.
Here's what we covered this week...
Jolly Phonics: J and the -ot word family
Sight Words: he and she
Math: We started composing and decomposing numbers.
composing: 3+2=5
decomposing: 5=3+___
Writing: We continue to write true stories but there's a bigger focus on writing so others can read it. The children looked through their old stories and helped me make a list of what makes books easier to read. We all agreed putting spaces between words, using our word wall to help us write sight words, stretching out all the sounds in words, and drawing pictures with details helps us to remember what we wrote.
Science: We started our Living and Nonliving Unit. Rivershire Nature Center was the perfect introduction. Did you see the pictures from our trip on the website?
Social Studies: We will be focusing on families through December.
Hope you're having a great weekend,
Becky Clay
